Huckabee's Evasive Answer
Mon Dec 3, 2007
Joseph Curl is certainly
correct that "one of the night's biggest laugh lines" in Wednesday's
Republican debate was uttered by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee,
but there was nothing funny about it ("Romney, Giuliani battle," Page
1, Thursday). Responding to the question, "What would Jesus do" about
the death penalty, something he supports, Mr. Huckabee responded that
"Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office."
What does that kind of evasive answer to a sincere question of faith tell us about a candidate who invokes his faith as a qualification for the presidency? Religious conviction has an important role to play in American politics. But that won't be the case if those who claim to be the most religious are not prepared to tell us what they really believe or to revisit their beliefs in light of powerful new questions or legal realities that reflect how the world has changed in 2,000 years. Last time I checked, that is what real faith is meant to empower us to do. RABBI BRAD HIRSCHFIELD President National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership New York City |
