The Ten Commandments: Road Version
by Brad Hirschfield

10commandmentsroad.jpgThe Vatican’s recent offering of a Ten Commandments for the road is a beautiful thing…at first glance. To be sure, it focuses attention on the single most used instrument of power to which most people have regular access and the use of which over which we have the greatest control – let’s face it, the average plane crash kills more people than does the average car wreck, but most of us are not pilots. In other words, this is something about which we can do something to make the world safer and our lives’ better. If that isn’t what religion should be doing, then something is really wrong. So, to that end, the Vatican deserves our praise for providing guidelines that are good for all of us, whatever our faith.

Of course, nothing in the Vatican happens by accident, at least not when it is for public release. And so we do have to wonder about the source of this new religious teaching. Why is this document coming from the Vatican’s office for migrants and itinerant people? Why was it released with three other teachings: on prostitution, on homelessness, and on the abandonment of children? All three of which really do affect migrants and itinerant people vastly more often. Do they really believe that bad driving is a problem more germane to migrants and itinerants also? Do they actually think that “those people” can’t drive and that it’s the responsibility of “good Christians” to show them the right way?

The use of the word “primitive” in the Church’s description of those elements of our being that are evoked by driving is particularly strange. Given that most migrant and itinerant people are poor and from the third world, the use of the word primitive should at least raise some eyebrows. Is that really the best language a bunch of people whose ministry is to such a population can use?

However unintentional, the whiff of arrogance is wafting in the air with the issue of this new Ten Commandments. However well-intentioned their work, religionists of every faith need to remain cognizant that their desire to enhance the lives of others by teaching them how to live better, remains respectful of those they want to teach and not perpetuate ugly stereotypes of them in order to mobilize the teaching effort. In the extremes we call that a crusade. Remember that teaching about the road to Hell and good intentions?
