Giving Hamas Credit for ALL That They Have Achieved
By Brad Hirschfield
British journalist Alan Johnston is free after months of captivity and that deserves to be celebrated. Hamas and its leader, Ismail Haniya played an instrumental part in freeing him and they deserve credit for so doing. If using their relationship with groups even more fanatical and violent than they are actually leads to increased order, not only in Gaza, but in Israel and throughout the world, then this will be seen as a turning point in their evolution from terrorists to statesmen. That such is possible should never be forgotten, but neither should the context in which they achieved this one act of decency.
Johnston was held by long-time Hamas ally, the Army of Islam. It was their long relationship and history of close cooperation that allowed Hamas leadership to broker the deal. And while the two groups seem to have gone their separate ways operationally, there is no indication from Hamas that they object to the principles or the values which animate their former allies. In sum, they disagree about the strategic value of kidnapping certain innocents, but not about the morality of kidnapping. If they did, then now would be the perfect time to condemn all kidnapping for political gain. But since Hamas soldiers have kidnapped not only Israelis, but Fatah members as well, such a condemnation is not like to be forthcoming and we should see Johnston’s release as what it is: a tactical move in a long war – important for Mr. Johnston, but not very promising for the world.
Hamas hoped that their brokering of the Johnston deal would secure immediate praise from the world community, and it appears that it will not. Mr. Haniya needs to wake up to the fact that simply “restoring order” in Gaza, as he so often promises, will not bring him the global acceptance that he so desperately seeks. Many repressive regimes maintain order, which is not the end point of good government. His administration will have to go to war against whomever they consider to be terrorists with as much zeal as they have gone to war against the State of Israel and against their own political rivals in Fatah. Only then will they be deserving of the confidence of the United States, the EU, and even possibly Israel. The fact that it seems unlikely to happen however, should not keep us from watching closely for the first signs that it might and properly nurturing those signs. |
