Free Porn on NBC: Dateline
What else would you call sixty minutes of lurid descriptions of adult men trolling the internet for girls and boys with whom to have sex?
The audience gets to listen to tapes of
the conversations (held with decoys posing as children), read
transcripts of the internet chat between these sickos and their
intended victims, and even see pornographic photos which they send on
the assumption that these kids will get excited by them. To be sure,
the producers shadow out the most intimate body parts (as if that makes
a real difference), but have no fear, they provide graphic verbal
descriptions to make up for what we are not allowed to see.
Here’s the deal: NBC’s Dateline continues to present episode after episode of sting operations designed to catch adults interested in meeting children for sex…and America keeps watching! It’s so popular, that they rebroadcast the original show repeatedly on their cable channel MSNBC! Of course, the producers would have us believe that they are providing a public service educating us about the dangers of sexual predators who are stalking our kids and even scaring those potential criminals enough to keep them from their disgusting pursuits. Please! These men are sick, very sick, and no amount of fear will keep them from their appointed rounds anymore than fear of arrest keeps heroin addicts from trolling the streets for their next score. And even it they could be scared out of their illness, or at least acting on it, how many perverts are sitting around waiting for the next episode of televised “therapy”? Perhaps, the producers would like us to believe that this is about public education i.e. if enough parents and kids knew how dangerous it could be they would stay off the internet. That’s as ridiculous as the first claim. Any kid, who doesn’t know enough to stop chatting when an adult tells them all the “things” he hopes they will do together, is not likely to respond to this show. And, any parents who allow their kids unrestricted and undifferentiated use of the internet are not likely to stop because of this either. So what is this about? Sadly, it’s about us. It’s about the fact that NBC and the folks at Dateline know what most Americans do not want to admit: we love this stuff! We get a peek into a forbidden world of abusive sexual behavior, and even get to feel virtuous about peeking in. This is voyeurism at its worst and we have nobody to blame but ourselves. Of course, I wish that the network and the show could resist trading on the public’s appetite for this soft core pornographic thrill seeking, but ultimately they are there to make money and if we shut off the television, then they would stop making the shows. It’s up to us. |
